The global corona pandemic leads to tense supply situations in many African countries, exacerbating the problems of the poorer sections of the population. Therefore, the GAUFF Foundation has supported various corona aid projects in Angola, Mozambique, Uganda and Senegal with money and donations in kind, as well as organisational help from the employees of GAUFF Engineering.
In Uganda, we were able to present Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda with five tons of maize and two tons of beans on 16.04.2020 for distribution to needy families, as well as a cash donation of EUR 17,500 to the "National Response COVID-19 Fund". This fund is managed by the Prime Minister's office in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and is designed to procure protective equipment, among other things.
In Angola, the GAUFF Foundation will support the "Governo Provincial de Luanda" in the establishment and operation of two centres for street children, thereby preventing or reducing the further spread of COVID-19. The children receive accommodation and food, education and medical care there, to which they previously had no access.
In Mozambique, the GAUFF Foundation works closely with the Mozambican Ministry of Health to better prepare state hospitals for the expected increase in COVID-19 case numbers. An acute lack of protective equipment has hitherto made it impossible for hospitals to adequately protect staff from being infected by COVID-19 patients. The GAUFF Foundation therefore hands over a donation in kind, consisting of protective clothing, masks and disinfectants, to the value of EUR 20,000 to the Mozambican Ministry of Health.
In Senegal, a partner country in CwA (Compact with Africa), hand hygiene is a major problem, particularly in the capital Dakar, such as in markets or even in health centres. That is why we gladly responded to the request from the Ministry of Health and the local authorities and donated 110 mobile hand-washing stations with a corresponding supply of disinfectant soap. Because we are particularly concerned about the precarious supply situation of the disadvantaged population, we also followed the call from President Macky Sall and handed over more than 15 tons of rice to the state.
But also at our headquarters in Nuremberg, we help families in need that are particularly affected by corona and the people who have to live on the margins of our society. Here, the GAUFF Foundation made available an amount of EUR 11,000 for the Stapf children's and youth centre run by Caritas and for the homeless shelter of Nuremberg city mission.
As of 23.04.2020, our COVID-19 emergency aid already amounts to more than EUR 91,000 and beyond that, we are planning further aid actions.
